What did Bonitz build at Hilton Head Island Airport?
The airport’s new $42 million Phase 1 terminal officially opened in May 2026, a decade after the airport’s vision began to take shape. The 27,000 SF facility more than doubles the airport’s size and replaces aging facilities from the 1990s.
Bonitz provided the terrazzo installation throughout the terminal. The result is a custom floor that reflects the beauty and character of Hilton Head Island while withstanding the demands of a high-traffic transportation hub.
How did Hilton Head Island inspire the terrazzo design?
The color palette draws from the island’s natural landscape: sea, sand, marsh and foliage. It brings a sense of place to every step.
The team curated nine custom colors exclusively for this project and meticulously reviewed more than 100 samples to achieve the vision. Marble aggregates sourced from quarries around the world add natural veining and variation, giving the finished floor depth and character.
How was the terrazzo floor installed?
The floor was crafted on a perfectly flat substrate so the artwork would align seamlessly and the finished product would stand the test of time. The artwork was field assembled, installed piece by piece on site to create a seamless design.
Why did collaboration matter?
Bonitz worked closely with Edison Foard and the design teams every step of the way. The airport put it this way:
“Projects like these don’t happen without collaboration. Our partnership with Edison Foard was instrumental throughout the entire process. This helped turn an ambitious vision into a finished space that will welcome travelers for years to come,” Hilton Head Island Airport, SC, 2026.
